Enter your area to see the total 10-year cost difference. Rubber mulch costs more upfront but lasts 10-15 years vs 1-2 years for wood.
Rubber Mulch Coverage by Depth (3in/4in/6in playground)
Rubber mulch coverage drops as depth rises. One cubic yard of rubber mulch covers 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep, 81 sq ft at 4 inches, 54 sq ft at 6 inches, 36 sq ft at 9 inches, and 27 sq ft at 12 inches. Use 3 inches for landscape beds, 4 to 5 inches for residential playgrounds, and 6 to 12 inches for commercial playgrounds per ASTM F1487 depth standards.
How Much Rubber Mulch for a Playground (ASTM F1292)
ASTM F1292 sets the impact attenuation standard for playground rubber mulch. Equipment up to 4 feet high needs 6 inches of rubber mulch. Equipment 4 to 7 feet needs 9 inches. Equipment over 7 feet needs 12 inches. A 4 inch installation gives 10 ft critical fall height (CFH) protection. A 5 inch installation gives 12 ft CFH. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) enforces these depths on all public play areas. Use IPEMA-certified rubber mulch for commercial installs.
Rubber Mulch Around Above-Ground Pools
Rubber mulch around above-ground pools needs 2 to 3 inches of depth in a 24 to 36 inch wide ring outside the pool wall. Rubber drains faster than wood mulch, so pool overflow does not pool on the surface. A 24 ft round pool with a 30 inch ring needs 1.4 cubic yards of rubber mulch at 3 inches deep. The rubber does not rot, attract termites, or stain the pool liner.
Rubber Mulch Weight (heavier than wood)
Rubber mulch weighs 800 to 1,200 pounds per cubic yard - heavier than wood mulch at 400 to 600 lbs per yard. One cubic foot of rubber weighs 38 to 44 lbs. A 2 cubic foot bag of rubber mulch weighs 40 lbs. Per square foot at 3 inches deep, rubber weighs about 10 lbs. A half-ton pickup truck handles only 1 cubic yard of rubber safely. Plan one trip per yard versus 2 to 3 yards per trip for wood mulch.
Cost per Sq Ft vs Wood Mulch
Rubber mulch costs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot at 3 inches depth. Wood mulch costs $0.30 to $0.75 per square foot at the same depth. Bulk rubber costs $200 to $400 per cubic yard versus $25 to $75 for bulk wood. Rubber bags cost $8 to $12 per 2 cu ft bag. Rubber lasts 10 to 15 years. Wood lasts 1 to 3 years. Over 10 years, rubber wins on total cost despite higher upfront price.

At 3 inches deep: approximately 10 lbs per sq ft. At 6 inches: ~20 lbs/sq ft. At 9 inches (playground minimum): ~30 lbs/sq ft. At 12 inches: ~40 lbs/sq ft. Use the calculator above to get exact amounts for your specific area.
At $0.50/lb and 3-inch depth: approximately $1.50-$2.50 per square foot. Playground depths (9-12") cost $4.50-$6.00 per sq ft in material alone. Professional installation adds $0.50-$1.50/sq ft labor. Despite the higher upfront cost, rubber mulch is often cheaper over 10+ years than repeatedly replacing wood mulch.
It depends on the application. Rubber mulch wins for playgrounds (durability, safety, weed suppression), pathways, and areas where you want a permanent, low-maintenance solution. Wood mulch wins for vegetable gardens, new plantings (soil health), and areas where heat retention is a concern. For most flower beds and ornamental plantings, either works well.
Rinse with a garden hose for light debris. For heavier cleaning, rake out leaves and organic matter, then rinse. A diluted bleach solution (1:10) can sanitize playground rubber mulch annually. Some commercial playground maintenance services offer rubber mulch cleaning and sanitizing. Avoid pressure washers which can redistribute and scatter the mulch.
An above-ground pool needs a 24 to 36 inch wide ring of rubber mulch at 2 to 3 inches depth around the perimeter. A 24 ft round pool with a 30 inch ring needs 1.4 cubic yards at 3 inches. Rubber drains faster than wood and does not rot near the pool liner.
ASTM F1292 requires 6 inches for equipment up to 4 ft high, 9 inches for 4-7 ft, and 12 inches for over 7 ft. A 4 inch residential install gives 10 ft critical fall height protection. CPSC enforces these depths on public play areas.
