How Mulch Weight Converts to Tons

Mulch weight converts to tons by multiplying cubic yards by the material weight per yard and dividing by 2000. One ton equals 2000 pounds. A cubic yard of hardwood mulch weighs about 600 pounds, so five cubic yards is 3000 pounds or 1.5 tons. The calculator first finds the volume with Length x Width x Depth in inches divided by 324, then applies the weight factor for your material. Suppliers sell rock and gravel by the ton, so the tons figure tells you exactly what to order for heavy materials.

Tons by Material (bark / wood / rubber / stone)

Material density sets the weight per cubic yard. Bark and hardwood mulch weigh 400 to 800 pounds per cubic yard, or 0.2 to 0.4 tons. Pine bark is lighter at about 450 pounds. Rubber mulch weighs 800 to 1200 pounds, or 0.4 to 0.6 tons. Rock and gravel are the heaviest at 2400 to 3000 pounds, or 1.4 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Straw is the lightest at 200 to 300 pounds. The Mulch and Soil Council (MSC) treats the cubic yard as the bulk standard, while weight matters most for delivery and hauling.

Tons to Yards & Cubic Feet

Tons convert back to volume by dividing by the material weight. One ton of hardwood mulch at 600 pounds per yard is 3.3 cubic yards. One ton of rock at 2700 pounds per yard is only 0.74 cubic yards. This is why a ton of rock covers far less ground than a ton of bark. One cubic yard always equals 27 cubic feet regardless of material. The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) advises ordering by volume for bark and by weight for stone to avoid costly mismatches.

Does wet mulch weigh more in tons?

Wet mulch weighs up to 50 percent more than dry mulch. Rain doubles the weight of shredded hardwood within 24 hours. A dry cubic yard at 600 pounds can reach 900 pounds after a storm. Plan hauling and truck payload around wet weight in rainy seasons. Rubber mulch is the exception because it does not absorb water and stays at a constant weight.

How many tons does a truck hold?

A half-ton pickup safely carries about 0.5 tons, which is one cubic yard of rock or one to two cubic yards of bark. A one-ton truck carries 3 to 4 cubic yards of bark. Always check the door-jamb payload rating before loading. Overloading with heavy wet mulch or stone damages tires, suspension, and brakes.

When to Order Mulch by the Ton

Order mulch by the ton when buying rock, gravel, or stone, because suppliers price these heavy materials by weight. Order bark and wood mulch by the cubic yard, since they are light and sold by volume. A delivery slip for rock shows tons, while a slip for bark shows yards. Knowing the tonnage protects you at the scale house and confirms you got the full order. The calculator gives both numbers so you can check either way.

Tonnage also drives the delivery method. A single ton of rock fills only about 0.74 cubic yards, so a 5 yard rock order weighs nearly 7 tons and needs a heavy dump truck. The same 5 yards of bark weighs only 1.5 tons and fits in a standard load. Plan the truck around the heaviest material. The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) uses tons for stone specs and cubic yards for organic mulch on every commercial job, and the same split works for home projects.

FAQ

A cubic yard of bark or wood mulch weighs 0.2 to 0.4 tons. Rubber is 0.4 to 0.6 tons. Rock and gravel are 1.4 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard.

Multiply cubic yards by the material weight per yard, then divide by 2000. Five cubic yards of hardwood at 600 lbs per yard is 1.5 tons.

Calculate cubic yards with L x W x D in inches / 324, then multiply by material weight and divide by 2000. A 20 x 10 ft bed at 3 inches of bark is about 0.55 tons.

Moisture and material drive the weight. Wet mulch weighs up to 50 percent more than dry. Rock weighs five times more than bark per cubic yard because it is denser.

A half-ton pickup carries about 0.5 tons of rock or 1 to 2 cubic yards of bark safely. Never exceed the door-jamb payload rating with heavy wet mulch or stone.

One ton of bark mulch at 600 lbs per yard is about 3.3 cubic yards. One ton of rock at 2700 lbs per yard is only 0.74 cubic yards, since rock is far denser than bark.
