How Mulch Weight Converts to Tons

Mulch weight converts to tons by multiplying cubic yards by the material weight per yard and dividing by 2000. One ton equals 2000 pounds. A cubic yard of hardwood mulch weighs about 600 pounds, so five cubic yards is 3000 pounds or 1.5 tons. The calculator first finds the volume with Length x Width x Depth in inches divided by 324, then applies the weight factor for your material. Material density sets the weight per cubic yard. Bark and hardwood mulch weigh 400 to 800 pounds per cubic yard, or 0.2 to 0.4 tons. Pine bark is lighter at about 450 pounds. Rubber mulch weighs 800 to 1200 pounds, or 0.4 to 0.6 tons. Rock and gravel are the heaviest at 2400 to 3000 pounds, or 1.4 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Straw is the lightest at 200 to 300 pounds. The Mulch and Soil Council (MSC) treats the cubic yard as the bulk standard, while weight matters most for delivery and hauling.

Tons convert back to volume by dividing by the material weight. One ton of hardwood mulch at 600 pounds per yard is 3.3 cubic yards. One ton of rock at 2700 pounds per yard is only 0.74 cubic yards. This is why a ton of rock covers far less ground than a ton of bark. One cubic yard always equals 27 cubic feet regardless of material. The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) advises ordering by volume for bark and by weight for stone to avoid costly mismatches.

Does wet mulch weigh more in tons?

Wet mulch weighs up to 50 percent more than dry mulch. Rain doubles the weight of shredded hardwood within 24 hours. A dry cubic yard at 600 pounds can reach 900 pounds after a storm. Plan hauling and truck payload around wet weight in rainy seasons. Rubber mulch is the exception because it does not absorb water and stays at a constant weight.

How many tons does a truck hold?
