How Much Topsoil Do I Need
The topsoil you need depends on the area and depth. The formula is Length x Width x Depth in inches divided by 324 for cubic yards. A 1,000 sq ft lawn at 1 inch deep needs 3.1 cubic yards, which is about 4 tons. One cubic foot of topsoil weighs roughly 75 pounds, so a cubic yard weighs 1.0 to 1.3 tons dry. The calculator returns cubic yards, tons, cubic feet, and bag count together. Suppliers sell topsoil by both the yard and the ton, so the tons figure lets you check a weight-based quote against your plan.
Top-Dressing Depth (1/4in to 1/2in)
Lawn top-dressing should stay between 0.25 and 1 inch deep. One inch is the maximum for a single application on established grass. More than 1 inch at once smothers the crowns, blocks sunlight, and can kill the turf. To raise a lawn higher, apply soil gradually over several top-dressings across seasons. Top-dressing fills low spots, smooths the surface for mowing, and adds organic matter after core aeration. The numbers stay small: a 1,000 sq ft lawn at a quarter inch needs only 0.77 cubic yards.
| Project | Depth | Cubic Yards |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn top-dress (1,000 sqft) | 0.5 in | 1.54 yd³ |
| New seed bed (1,000 sqft) | 4-6 in | 12.3-18.5 yd³ |
| Sod prep (1,000 sqft) | 2-4 in | 6.2-12.3 yd³ |
| Flower bed (100 sqft) | 6-8 in | 1.85-2.47 yd³ |
Tons vs Yards
Topsoil is sold by both cubic yards and tons, and the two units measure different things. Cubic yards measure volume; tons measure weight. One cubic yard of dry topsoil weighs 1.0 to 1.3 tons. Order by the cubic yard to fill a known volume, and use the tons figure to check delivery weight and truck capacity. A single-axle dump truck carries about 5 to 6 tons, and a tandem-axle truck carries 10 to 14 tons. Wet topsoil weighs more than dry, so a rainy-season delivery may run heavier than the calculated tonnage.
What is the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?
Topsoil is the dark upper soil layer rich in organic matter, used for growing grass and plants. Fill dirt is the subsoil below it, used to fill holes and raise grade where nothing will grow. Topsoil costs more because it supports plant life. Use topsoil for lawns and beds, and fill dirt for structural fill. Never use fill dirt as a planting medium.
How do I level a lawn with topsoil?
Level a lawn by spreading a thin layer of topsoil into the low spots, never more than 1 inch at once. Rake it smooth and let the grass grow through before adding more. For deeper low spots, repeat the process over several weeks. Core aerate first so the new soil works into the root zone instead of sitting on top.
Topsoil for New Lawns
A new lawn needs 4 to 6 inches of quality topsoil for grass roots to establish. Spread the topsoil over the graded subsoil, rake it level, and lightly compact it before seeding or laying sod. For a 1,000 square foot lawn at 4 inches, that is 12.3 cubic yards, or about 14 tons of topsoil. This is a large delivery, so order bulk by the yard rather than bags. Test the soil and amend with compost if the topsoil is poor.
Sod needs slightly less topsoil than seed because the sod arrives with its own soil layer. A 2 to 4 inch base of topsoil under sod gives the roots room to knit in. Grade the topsoil to slope away from the house at 6 inches per 10 feet so water drains off the lawn. Roll the surface lightly to remove air pockets, then lay the sod or sow the seed. Water deeply for the first two weeks while the lawn establishes.
FAQ
Multiply length by width by depth in inches and divide by 324 for cubic yards. A 1,000 sq ft lawn at 1 inch deep needs 3.1 cubic yards or about 4 tons.
Lawn top-dressing should be 0.5 to 1 inch, never more than 1 inch at once. New seed needs 4 to 6 inches, sod needs 2 to 4 inches, flower beds need 6 to 8 inches.
One cubic yard of dry topsoil weighs 1.0 to 1.3 tons. One cubic foot weighs about 75 pounds. Wet topsoil weighs more, so confirm tonnage with the supplier.
Yes. More than 1 inch at once can smother and kill the grass. Apply gradually over multiple top-dressings if you need to raise the level more.
Calculate cubic yards first, then multiply by 1.1 to 1.3 tons per yard. A 5 cubic yard order is about 5.5 to 6.5 tons.
Topsoil is the rich upper layer for growing plants. Fill dirt is subsoil for filling holes and raising grade. Use topsoil for lawns and beds, fill dirt for structural fill.
