Black Dyed Mulch Coverage

Black mulch covers the same area as natural mulch because dye does not change volume. One cubic yard of black mulch covers 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, and 81 sq ft at 4 inches. The formula is Length x Width x Depth in inches / 324 = Cubic Yards. A 20 x 10 ft bed at 3 inches needs 1.85 cubic yards or 25 bags of 2 cubic feet. It takes 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet to fill one cubic yard. Black mulch is dyed shredded hardwood, so it weighs 500 to 700 lbs per cubic yard like natural hardwood.

Is Black Mulch Safe?

Black mulch is safe for plants, pets, and soil once it dries. The black color comes from carbon black pigment suspended in water-based dye. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists carbon black as an approved colorant, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not regulate it as hazardous. The pigment binds into the wood fiber and does not leach into soil or groundwater in measurable amounts. The one caution is the source wood. Cheap dyed mulch can be made from recycled construction debris that may carry contaminants. Buy black mulch certified by the Mulch and Soil Council (MSC) to confirm clean wood. Keep all mulch 2 inches off plant stems to prevent rot.

Black vs Brown vs Red

Black, brown, and red mulch differ only in pigment, not in coverage or weight. Black uses carbon black and lasts 8 to 12 months. Brown uses an iron oxide blend and lasts 8 to 14 months. Red uses iron oxide and fades fastest, shifting toward orange-pink within one season. Black suits modern homes and high-contrast beds with bright flowers. Brown looks natural and hides fading well. Red pairs with brick and warm-toned hardscaping. All three weigh and cover the same as undyed hardwood mulch of the same bag size.

Does black mulch fade?

Black mulch fades slowly over 8 to 12 months. Carbon black resists ultraviolet light better than the iron oxide used in red and brown mulch. Sun exposure speeds fading, so beds in full sun lose color faster than shaded beds. Restore the dark color with a thin half-inch top-dress of fresh black mulch each spring rather than a full replacement.

Does black mulch get hot?

Black mulch absorbs more solar heat than natural or brown mulch. Surface temperatures run 10 to 20 degrees higher in direct summer sun. The heat rarely harms established shrubs but can stress shallow-rooted annuals. Keep black mulch 2 inches away from tender stems and water beds well in heat waves. In very hot climates, brown mulch is the cooler choice for annual flower beds.

How to Apply Black Mulch

Black mulch goes down in four steps for a clean finish. Clear the bed of weeds and rake the soil level. Edge the bed with a spade or steel edging so the dark mulch meets the lawn in a crisp line. Spread the mulch and rake it to an even 3 inch depth. Pull the mulch 2 inches back from every plant stem and tree trunk. Water lightly to settle the dye and lock the color into the wood fiber.

The crisp edge matters most with black mulch because the dark color shows every stray piece on the grass. Re-cut the edge each spring before top-dressing. A thin half-inch refresh restores the bold color without the cost of full replacement. Apply black mulch on a dry day so the dye sets before rain, which prevents staining on nearby patios and walkways. Keep fresh black mulch off concrete because the wet dye can leave a temporary gray mark until it cures.

FAQ

A 500 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 4.63 cubic yards of black mulch or 63 bags of 2 cubic feet. Order 5 cubic yards to cover the 10 percent buffer.

Black mulch is not toxic to plants once dry. The carbon black dye is FDA-approved and EPA-unregulated. Buy MSC-certified mulch to confirm the source wood is clean and free of construction debris.

Black mulch holds its color 8 to 12 months and breaks down over 1 to 2 years. Top-dress a thin layer each spring to refresh the dark color without a full replacement.

One cubic yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cubic foot black mulch or 9 bags of 3 cubic foot. Round up and buy 14 bags of 2 cu ft per yard.

Black mulch gives bold contrast and lasts 8 to 12 months. Brown mulch looks natural, hides fading, and lasts 8 to 14 months. Both cover and weigh the same. Choose by the look you want.
