Weight by mulch type (per cubic yard):
Bark / Hardwood: 400-600 lbs Rubber mulch: 800-1,200 lbs Rock / Gravel: 2,400-3,000 lbs Straw mulch: 200-300 lbs

Formula - Length x Width x Depth / 27

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. The yards of mulch formula divides your bed volume in cubic feet by 27 to convert it to cubic yards.

Cubic Yards Formula
Yards = L (ft) x W (ft) x D (in) / 324
Equivalent to: Length x Width x (Depth / 12) / 27

How to Calculate Yards of Mulch - Step by Step

1
Measure bed length and width in feet

A 10 ft x 20 ft garden bed has 200 square feet of area.

2
Choose depth in inches

Standard depth is 3 inches for most landscape beds. The National Gardening Association recommends 3-4 inches for organic mulch.

3
Apply the formula

200 sq ft x 3 in / 324 = 1.85 cubic yards. Or: 200 x (3/12) / 27 = 1.85 yd³.

4
Add 10% waste factor

1.85 x 1.10 = 2.04 cubic yards. The International Society of Arboriculture recommends the 10% settling buffer for all mulch projects.

Bed Shape Area Formula Cubic Yards Formula
Rectangle / Square Length x Width L x W x D / 324
Circle 3.14 x Radius x Radius 3.14 x r2 x D / 324
Triangle 0.5 x Base x Height 0.5 x B x H x D / 324
Ring (Tree Ring) 3.14 x (R2 - r2) 3.14 x (R2 - r2) x D / 324
Trapezoid ((a + b) / 2) x Height ((a+b) / 2) x H x D / 324

D = depth in inches. Divide by 324 (= 12 x 27) converts inches and cubic feet to cubic yards in one step.

How Many Yards Do I Need by Bed Size

Use these reference tables to find the cubic yards for the four most common bed sizes. All values include no waste factor - add 10% to the result before ordering.

Yard-to-Bag Equivalents

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. The Mulch and Soil Council (MSC) sets the standard bag labeling - 2 cubic foot bags are the most common retail size across major home-improvement retailers.

Yard Coverage at 2in / 3in / 4in

Coverage = 324 / Depth (inches). One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch deep. The National Association of Landscape Professionals recommends 3 inches as the standard depth for residential beds.

FAQ

Cubic yards needed = Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Depth (in) / 324. A 10 x 20 ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 10 x 20 x 3 / 324 = 1.85 cubic yards. Add 10% for settling and waste - order 2.04 cubic yards. Use the calculator above for instant results.

Measure your bed in feet. Multiply length x width to get square footage. Multiply square footage by depth in inches, then divide by 324. The number 324 equals 12 x 27 - it converts depth from inches and volume from cubic feet to cubic yards in one step. Round up to the nearest 0.5 yard when ordering bulk.

One cubic yard of mulch covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, and 81 sq ft at 4 inches. Depth is the biggest variable - doubling the depth halves the coverage area.

One cubic yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch. Always round up and buy 14 bags per cubic yard. One yard also equals 18 bags of 1.5 cu ft mulch or 9 bags of 3 cu ft mulch. The Bags to Yards Converter handles this in both directions.

Bark and shredded hardwood mulch weighs 400-600 lbs per cubic yard when dry. Rubber mulch weighs 800-1,200 lbs per cubic yard. Rock and pea gravel weighs 2,400-3,000 lbs per cubic yard. A standard pickup truck carries 1-2 cubic yards of bark mulch - never exceed the truck payload rating.

Yes. A mulch calculator in yards and a cubic yards mulch calculator use the same formula: L x W x D / 324. The output is cubic yards in both cases. The Cubic Yards Calculator on this site adds support for circular, triangular, and irregular bed shapes beyond the standard rectangle.

A standard single-axle dump truck carries 7-10 cubic yards of mulch per load. A tandem-axle truck carries 12-14 cubic yards. Local landscape suppliers charge a delivery fee of $40-$80 per load on top of the material cost. Bulk delivery is cost-effective for projects over 3 cubic yards.
